Profile

James Stewart is a graduate from the University of Auckland. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Master's degree in Economics.

He is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the Department of Accounting and Finance at Unitec Institute of Technology. He has taught economics in the United States, the United Kingdom and Austria. For the past twelve years he has facilitated workshops for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) Professional Accounting School. He is a member of the New Zealand Association of Economists (NZAE) and the International Institute for Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET).

His current research focus, on the New Zealand Fisheries Quota Management System, (QMS) investigates the impact of the QMS on concentration of quota and on the small fisher. His work has been of interest to an international audience, evidenced by publication in the 'A - level' journal Marine Policy, and favourable citations and support by the Ministry of Fisheries. He is author of a popular Economics textbook, now in its 5th edition and prescribed for economics students in New Zealand and the Pacific.
