Profile

Dan completed an MSc in botany revising the lichen genus Ramalina for New Zealand at the University of Auckland, quickly followed by a PhD in botany at the same institution, studying the systematics, cytology and breeding systems of the New Zealand iris (Libertia) . He teaches into botany, biosecurity, ecology and biodiversity courses in the Bachelor of Applied Science.

Dan has a research background in lichen systematics and the morphology, anatomy and evolution of native plants. Current research projects focus on: studying the systematics and ecology of lichens and native plants in New Zealand; examining the ecology of invasive plants; and identifying new treatments for imported plant material identified as potential biosecurity hazards.
