Principles of Captive Wild Animal Husbandry (Sem B) (NSCI5742-SB)

This course enables the student to understand the theoretical principles of best practice animal husbandry in a zoo or similar captive wild animal facility.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Management programme to enrol in this course. Co-requisite: NSCI4740. Students must enrol in both NSCI5742-SA & NSCI5742-SB to complete the course.
Topics include: 

General biodata, role in ecosystem, Habitat and distribution, Innate behaviours, learned behaviours, observing and describing behaviour,
evolution of behaviour, domestication, natural animal behaviour, problem animal behaviour, management of problem behaviour, animal welfare concepts, the 5 Welfare Domains, behavioural assessments
learning theory, animal training and enrichment, operant and Classical conditioning, unconditioned and conditioned responses, training techniques, behavioural and environment enrichment
Animal requirements, health, safety, maintenance, accessibility considerations, types of enclosures, public viewing, perception, cultural sensitivity, consultation, collaboration
Nutrition, diets, food as enrichment and for presentations, supplementation, production, acquisition and maintenance of both plant and animal foods, ethics and welfare of animal foods, theory of hygiene, safety, cleaning, zoonoses,
physical and behavioural indicators of health and ill health, principles of preventative health care and its application, the biology of parasite life cycles (ectoparasites and endoparasites),
infection and disease in animals, routine health care procedures, methods of animal identification
Containment systems, pest plant and pest animal management, equipment and its use for handling, safe restraint and transport, techniques for handling, restraint and transport
Animal selection, reproductive and developmental timeframes, breeding control techniques, general requirements for breeding, techniques and requirements for hand rearing
