Molecular Genetics and Evolution (NSCI6748)

Level:
6
Credits:
15 (0.125 EFTS)
Compulsory:
No
Aim:
To explore the genetic basis of evolution; to acquire practical skills in basic molecular analysis; to assess how the study of genetics and the use of molecular tools can inform biodiversity conservation, animal breeding, animal welfare and our understanding of evolutionary ecology.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites:
Pre-requisite: NSCI5104.
Topics include:

- Molecular markers - Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and principles of population genetics - Wetlab molecular methods (DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis)
- Dideoxy DNA sequencing - A genetic viewpoint of the species concept - DNA barcoding
- From DNA sequences to phylogenetic tree - Species evolution - understanding the tree of life - Introduction to High-throughput DNA sequencing methods
- NGS case studies (animal breeding, molecular diagnostics, biodiversity conservation) - Epigenetics and animal welfare
