How can Unitec prepare me for an apprenticeship?

To prepare for an apprenticeship in the automotive industry, we recommend that you begin by studying the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3) This programme is a pre-requisite qualification will equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills, working for an employer. Most employers in the automotive industry prefer trainees who have undertaken some form of training prior to commencing work within the industry.

If you're in an apprenticeship arrangement with an appropriate employer, you can study one of the following automotive programmes part-time at Unitec to complete the theory component of your qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering (Level 4) - Study part-time, attending classes one or two nights a week while completing all practical components in your workplace. Once you've completed all of the credits (both practical and theoretical), you'll be eligible to apply to the NZQA for your New Zealand Certificate in Light Automotive Engineering qualification.
  • New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering (Level 4) - Study part-time, attending classes one or two nights a week while completing all practical components in your workplace. Once you've completed all of the credits (both practical and theoretical), you'll be eligible to apply to the NZQA for your New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering qualification.

How long will an apprenticeship take?

To be recognised as either a qualified automotive engineer or automotive electrical engineer, you need to undertake the necessary theory and practical work experience required by the New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) in an approved* automotive premises. It may take you between three and five years studying part-time to complete all programme requirements to enable you to apply for the relevant motor industry qualification.

Can I get cross-credits towards my apprenticeship?
