The Hīhīaua Studio

In 2016, the Momentum North Hīhīaua Community Group asked the Unitec Architecture Pathway to investigate the development of a new masterplan for the Hīhīaua Peninsula in Whangarei, Northland. This request became the basis of a twelve-week joint Landscape Architecture /Architecture studio project in 2017. The work resulting from the Hīhīaua Peninsula studio helped the community to develop their aspirations, and to produce an innovative urban design that proposes more sustainable development. Led by Unitec lecturers Matthew Bradbury, Dr Hugh Byrd, Lucia Melchiors and Xinxin Wang, this publication documents the students’ ingenious and broadly contextualised design schemes.
