Aim: 
To enable students to analyse theoretical and practical aspects of steering and suspension
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the Bachelor of Applied Technology programme to enrol in this course. Restriction: TTEC5312.
Topics include: 

Appropriate selection from following topics
Steering system
Directional control and Ackerman principle; Types of steering columns, gears, power assistance and linkage layouts; Steering geometry and kinematics.
Suspension
Independent and solid-axle suspensions, front and rear suspension designs; Passive, adaptive and active suspensions; Types of springs and shock absorbers, links and joints. Wheel and tyre assemblies.
Dynamics of steering and suspension
Centre-of-gravity three-dimensional location, linear and centrifugal accelerations and forces, load transfer, vehicle body roll, dive and squat,
Tyre slip angle, under- and oversteer, directional stability; Optimization of suspension system parameters.
Regulations and testing
National, regional and global regulations for vehicle suspension and controls; Evaluation of steering characteristics; Testing of suspension kinematics and compliance properties.
