Each year, the Board awards the Certifying Merit of Excellence Award acknowledging high standards of achievement in the certifying registration exams in Plumbing, Gasfitting, and Drainlaying.

Unitec Drainlaying student Yirui Miao achieved a mark of 98 in his certifying Drainlaying exam last year; the highest mark in the country.  Yirui started his Drainlaying training at Unitec in 2018 and became registered as a Tradesman Drainlayer in September this year.  He’s also eligible for Tradesman Plumber registration, having sat his certifying exams in 2018.

Unitec Gasfitting student Yongqiang Hu achieved the country’s highest mark in the certifying Gasfitting exam in January this year, scoring a total of 95.5. Yongqiang began his Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying apprenticeship with Unitec in 2017, and registered as a tradesman in Plumbing and Drainlaying in 2019.  He’ll become eligible to apply for registration as a certified plumber and drainlayer once he fulfils the 24-month requirement.

Lecturer in Unitec’s School of Trades and Services, John Pepere, said, “We’re all very proud of our students’ achievements and to be recognised as top in the country by the industry Board is huge recognition, both for the students and the School.

“Our hands-on learning, our industry connections and the calibre of our teaching staff all contribute to successful outcomes for our students, and we’re delighted to play a part in their journey.”
