Unitec New Zealand | Experience Real World Learning

Show me programmes available

Unitec's architecture and landscape architecture programmes focus on designing exciting and functional buildings, landscapes and gardens that shape the world around us. Along with an understanding of history and theory, you'll gain experience working with professionals in the industry.

International recognition

We are one of only three architectural schools in New Zealand to offer an internationally accredited course of study leading to professional registration as an architect. We’re also the first in the country to introduce the new standard professional qualification through our two-year Master of Architecture (Professional). What’s more, our programmes are endorsed by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the New Zealand Registered Architects Board and the Commonwealth Association of Architects. We’re also one of just three places you can study landscape architecture, and the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture qualification is accredited by the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA). Our landscape and garden design programmes are recognised as amongst the best in the country.

Real-world learning

Alongside experienced academics and practitioners from across New Zealand, our full-time, part-time and visiting lecturers include experts from Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the US. Together, they deliver a range of lively, engaging and challenging programmes. Real-world experience is built into each of these programmes through practical design projects and, at the professional masters level, mandatory work placements in architectural firms – a feature that is unique in New Zealand. Meanwhile, thanks to industry sponsorships, landscape design students exhibit their work at the Ellerslie International Flower Show, where they consistently win top awards.

Study in a global context

As an architecture student at Unitec, you have the opportunity to work with local experts in Māori, Pacific and classical architecture. Students of architecture and landscape architecture also get the chance to go on study tours to the Pacific and to countries such as Brazil, China, Japan and Italy to see the great architectural works of previous ages, as well as historic parks, gardens and urban landscapes. When studying architecture or landscape architecture, you could find yourself developing your understanding of contemporary trends through reciprocal study exchange agreements with our partner institutions in Asia, Europe, India, Latin America and the USA.

Charity house auction

Unitec is proud to support the "Big Build" charity house auction, where a group of Unitec architecture students banded together under the guidance of Associate Professor Dave Strachan and Strachan Group Architects to design and build a holiday home to raise money for KidsCan, a national charity aimed at helping disadvantaged children.

A short video clip of the "Big Build" charity house auction as featured on the Big Night In telethon can be watched here.
