Profile

Mel came to Unitec with twenty year's experience in biology and science education. His interest in natural history, especially ornithology, has lead to involvement in many ecological restoration projects. Initially these have been on islands, but increasingly are within urban Auckland. Mel’s application of ecology has been focussed on 5 projects in particular:  Tiritiri Matangi Island; the Miranda RAMSAR site; Chatham Island taiko expedition; the Waitemata Coastal Sanctuary Project (North Shore, Auckland); and the restoration of Motu Kaikoura.
Mel was awarded a Royal Society of New Zealand Science and Mathematics Teacher Fellowship in 1997, and is a past member of the Auckland Conservation Board and the editorial board of the Journal of Landscape and Urban Planning.
