You’re Invited: Matariki Celebration at Waiwharariki Anzac Square
Join us as we celebrate Matariki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s midwinter Māori New Year, with a special two-day event led by School of Architecture at Waiwharariki Anzac Square in Takapuna.
This year marks our third annual Matariki celebration, and to honour the occasion, second year ākonga from the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Bachelor of Architectural Studies programmes will present a series of interactive architectural light installations. These works explore themes of recyclability, storytelling, and creative reuse, brought to life by eight dedicated student groups.
Event Highlights:
Friday 20 June
- 6:30 AM – Karakia (dawn blessing) to open the celebration
- From morning onwards – Installation of student-designed light works
- 12:00 PM – Free BBQ lunch
- 5:30 PM – Free BBQ dinner
Saturday 21 June
- 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM – Student installations remain on display
- Celebrate alongside the Takapuna Beach Association Matariki Craft Festival
Come along to enjoy the kai, connect with community, and support our talented students as they light up the square—you’re warmly invited to be part of this uniquely local celebration.
No RSVP required – just show up and enjoy!
Ngā mihi nui – we look forward to seeing you there.
