About Microsoft Office 365

Microsoft Office 365 is a bundle of Microsoft programmes, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote, that you can access for free while you study with us.

Students also get 100GB of cloud storage via OneDrive.

Microsoft Office 365 versions are available for Windows and Apple (Mac) computers.

You can use an online version or download it to your device; both options are free.

Use online version

Via your Student Portal

  1. Login to Student Portal using your Unitec email address and password
  2. Click on the App Launcher icon, in the top left-hand corner (icon looks like a waffle)
  3. Click on either the Mail, Calendar or OneDrive icon to open the application
  4. Click on the App Launcher again to access any of the other 365 Apps

Via the Microsoft website

  1. Go to www.office.com
  2. Sign in with your Unitec email address and password
  3. You will now have access to the Apps

Download to your device

You can download the latest version of Office 365 on up to five different devices.

Download to your device

  1. Login to Student Portal using your Unitec email address and password
  2. Click on the App Launcher icon, in the top left-hand corner (icon looks like a waffle)
  3. Click on either the Mail, Calendar or OneDrive icon to open the application
  4. Click on App launcher again and click on ‘Office 365’
  5. Click on ‘Install Office’ (near top right of screen)
  6. Select Office 365 apps. This should download the setup on your browser
  7. Open the setup in your device to start installation

Office 365 free while studying

Licensing will be active from the day after enrolment, up to 90 days prior to class start date.

For most Unitec students the licensing will become inactive 190 days after class end date.

For Research and Post-Graduate thesis students, there is often a work requirement after the end of formal classes. Please see your Academic Programme Manager to apply for an extension. An extension will be activated by visiting Student Central with a request confirmed by your Academic Programme Manager.

Using Office 365 after your study

Microsoft will email you with options to continue using Office 365 by paying a subscription fee.

If you do not wish to pay a subscription fee your account will become inactive and you will not be able to access it.

If you wish to keep any files you have saved in OneDrive you will need to download them before your account expires.
