Programme overview

If you've already entered into an apprenticeship arrangement with an employer, you can further your knowledge of vehicle engineering with the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering). If you have successfully completed the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills) or the Certificate in Applied Technology (Automotive Engineering), you can progress into this programme, gaining cross-credits towards the national certificate qualification.

Note: The last date to complete the requirements to gain this qualification is 31 December 2017. After this time, this programme will be replaced by the following programmes:

Highlights

  • Extensive support: we work with your workplace to ensure your learning is supported on site
  • Flexible start date: Start at any date that suits you between February - November (inclusive)
  • Study that fits around your apprenticeship: you study the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering) on a part-time basis. You attend evening classes at Unitec one or two nights per week while completing all practical components in your workplace.
  • Staff who are experts in automotive engineering.
  • A supportive and structured learning environment.
  • Access to Unitec's automotive facilities, which include an engine management laboratory

Qualification

Once you've successfully completed this programme you'll receive the qualification: National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering).

    Admission requirements

    For this programme, you will need the following:

    1. A minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in two different subjects, one subject must be English
    2. Be at least 16 years old by the time the programme begins
    3. A minimum of four years secondary education
    4. Be employed in the Automotive Industry
    5. If English is your second language, you will need one or more of the following:

    • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
    • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
    • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

    Don’t meet these requirements? We also accept:

    • A relevant qualification at Level 2 on the NZQF or above or an equivalent qualification; or
    • Provide sufficient evidence to be eligible for special or discretionary admission.
