Explore our diverse research groups driving innovation and practical solutions across engineering, technology, education, and sustainability.
Power Systems
Group Leader: Dr Momen Bahadornejad
Research Focus:
The research area of interest includes: Power Systems Protection and Control, Smart Grids, Power Electronics application to Power Systems, Renewable Energy Systems, and Electricity Markets
AI, Data, and Software Systems
Lead: Professor Hamid Sharifzadeh
Research Focus:
The research group focuses on advancing artificial intelligence, data science, and software engineering to address complex real-world challenges. Our research spans machine learning, big data analytics, and software systems, with an emphasis on practical applications and emerging technologies. The group is also closely integrated with our master's and doctorate research programmes, providing students with opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research.
Education and Educational Technologies
Group Leader: Dr Niranjan Singh
Research Focus:
The past year has seen the rise in software use with the application of generative artificial intelligence in operations move into a more successful adoption and deployment. Working out where to focus education and where to implement educational technologies will be important. Challenges for education is keeping pace with new technologies and using educational technologies ethically. To bring our aspiration to life through research with a fusion of educational pedagogies, learning and facilitation, the underpinning focus is on environment, social and governance.
Transport Technologies
Group Leader: Roman Kudin
Research Focus:
The tyre emission factors (mg/km) are characterized by a high degree of uncertainty – the available data are very limited (especially for heavy vehicles), most of the studies are over 20 years old, and were conducted on European roads. Establishing the real-world emission factors for tyres in New Zealand is needed to evaluate the environmental impact of tyre wear material as a contaminant.
Cybersecurity and Networking
Group Leader: Dr Guillermo Ramirez Prado
Research Focus:
The Cybersecurity and Networking Research Group explores cutting-edge solutions in computer networks, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and IoT. We develop prototypes, publish impactful research, and collaborate with industry and academia—locally and globally. Students gain hands-on experience solving real-world challenges alongside our experts
