Te ao Māori is an exciting and enduring culture that has shaped Aotearoa's society and is an integral part of our contemporary lifestyle. Unitec’s Maia Māori Centre offers a fascinating range of Mātauranga Māori Electives for current students and free te reo short courses for everyone.
You could learn about the tikanga and kawa (protocols) of a marae, Māori philosophy and cosmology, and arts like tā moko (tattooing). You could even learn the traditional art of Māori flax weaving from some of the most skilled weavers in Aotearoa New Zealand. Or join one of our free te reo Māori night classes – perfect for beginners to advanced speakers.
Whatever Māori education course you choose, you'll get to explore our beautiful Te Noho Kotahitanga marae and wharekai. They are a hub for teaching and learning, a place for ceremonial and celebratory gatherings, and a source of local and historical knowledge.
You’ll also be taught by some of the best lecturers in an authentic tikanga Māori environment (a learning atmosphere guided by Māori protocols).
Ahakoa ko wai, no hea koe, ko tēnei te wā!
No matter who you are or where you are from, this is the time to immerse yourself in the richness of te ao Māori – the Māori world.
