Mt Albert whānau come together for Eid celebrations
Close to 260 ākonga (students) and kaimahi (staff) were present to celebrate Eid-al Fitr at the Mt Albert campus on Thursday, 26 March 2026.
Marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, the lunchtime event was jointly organised by Unitec’s Muslim Club and International team.
Many students and staff came dressed in colourful traditional attire, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere across campus.
The celebration offered an opportunity for our whānau to connect through food, shared experiences, and understanding. Attendees enjoyed a generous spread of food alongside activities and stalls, including henna painting and a popular lucky draw.
Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, marks the conclusion of Ramadan—a period during which Muslims fast daily from dawn until sunset. The month is dedicated to reflection, worship, charity, and community, culminating in celebrations that bring people together in gratitude and joy.
The event opened with a warm welcome and “Eid Mubarak” or “Blessed Eid” message from Research Administrator Asma Munir on behalf of the Muslim Club. This was followed by a brief introduction to Eid al-Fitr and a prayer led by Technologies Centre Coordinator (Applied Business), Mun Naqvi.

“Eid is a festival of thanksgiving for the privilege of having witnessed the holy month of Ramadan and, with God’s help, being able to fast, pray, and give in charity throughout,” said Mr Naqvi.
“It is also a festival of hope—that the deeds we have done during this sacred month will be accepted and rewarded, and that we will continue these practices throughout the year.”

The event highlighted the institution’s commitment to fostering an inclusive campus environment where the diverse cultures, religious beliefs and traditions of our students and staff are celebrated and shared.
“It was wonderful to celebrate Eid with our students and staff. A huge thanks to our amazing Muslim faith staff for coming together to ensure we had a shared celebration kai to end Ramadan. The diversity that we represent is celebrated as one of our strengths as an institute,” says Director Student Success, Annette Pitovao.
