MIT and Unitec draw crowds on opening day of ASB Polyfest 2026
Gaining a career through applied education attracted strong interest on the opening day of ASB Polyfest, held at Manukau Sports Bowl on a stunning Wednesday in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
A highlight of the day was the Sports Circuit Challenge activation, which proved a major drawcard for rangatahi (young people) visiting the marquee. The interactive challenge showcased the breadth of sports programmes offered across both institutions, while encouraging friendly competition and engagement.
Participants completed a high-energy circuit — rowing for 10 calories, followed by 10 dumbbell snatches, 10 goblet squats, 10 kettlebell swings and finishing with five burpees. Those who completed the challenge earned a spin on the prize wheel, with many attempting to beat the fastest time of the day.

Pacific Academic Lecturer and Polyfest volunteer Venusi Taumoeapeau says the turnout exceeded expectations.
“Wednesday is usually the quietest day, but we saw a steady flow of young people coming through the marquee and taking part. It was great to connect with them and see their enthusiasm for the event,” Venusi says.

Widely recognised as Australasia’s largest secondary school cultural festival, ASB Polyfest is expected to draw more than 80,000 visitors during the week.
This year’s programme is split across two events, with the Pacific and Diversity stages running from 18–21 March at the Manukau Sports Bowl, followed by the Te Paparewa Māori stage from 30 March–2 April at Due Drop Event Centre.
MIT and Unitec’s presence at Polyfest reflects a long-standing commitment to the communities they serve. Unitec became the festival’s first tertiary sponsor in 2003, while MIT sponsored the Niue stage in 2010. Together, the institutions supported the Tongan stage in 2025.

Executive Director Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga says the joint presence continues a legacy of community engagement.
“Although MIT and Unitec have only recently official come together as a new joint entity, our long and proud history of serving communities and learners across Tāmaki Makaurau for more than 50 years remains strong. Our presence at ASB Polyfest reflects that ongoing commitment,” Peseta says.

Festival-goers are encouraged to visit the MIT and Unitec marquee to learn more about our study options, career pathways and student life. Visitors can meet staff, take part in activations and connect with the team throughout the event, which finishes on Saturday.
