\"\"<\/a>The Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b \u2013 Hiringa Hauora Summer Research Mentorship is a kaupapa M\u0101ori collaboration to increase hauora M\u0101ori (M\u0101ori wellbeing) research capacity. The idea of research internships is not new, nor is a focus on hauora M\u0101ori. What is distinctive about this summer mentorship is its kaupapa M\u0101ori approach to support a diverse range of M\u0101ori into research that is by M\u0101ori, for M\u0101ori, and holds M\u0101ori values, beliefs and aspirations at its centre. Holding fast to our ways of being throughout the programme has produced a set of learnings and experiences amongst six \u2018interns\u2019 that we suggest offers a useful example of how to grow kaupapa M\u0101ori research in the hauora space, and beyond.<\/p>\n

Like many great M\u0101ori ideas, this mentorship programme was enabled through whanaungatanga (relationships) \u2013 in this case an email from one colleague to another that went something like, \u201cHey mete I have an idea I want to run past you.\u201d A senior researcher at Te Hiringa Hauora, an evidence-based health-promotions organisation, approached her colleague, co-author Hinekura Smith, a senior lecturer and researcher at Unitec\u2019s Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b M\u0101ori and Indigenous Research Centre, with a funding opportunity to develop and facilitate a summer internship programme.<\/p>\n
