\"Klasz_Inbetween\"<\/a>In 2016, Austrian architect and designer Walter Klasz<\/a> visited Auckland as a Researcher in Residence, hosted by\u00a0Unitec.<\/p>\n

Walter\u2019s work focuses on the potential of \u2018self-forming-structures\u2019 \u2013 constructions that emerge from the tensile and compressive forces that can be manipulated by the designer and the builder. While in New Zealand he was inspired by Polynesian construction and design, by forms found in nature and the landscape, and\u00a0by his contemporaries working and studying at Unitec. The culmination of his residency was an exhibition at Snowwhite gallery in Auckland, for which Klasz created an accompanying book describing his\u00a0process, including iterative designs, self-reflection and discussion with friends and colleagues; an\u00a0autoethnographic account of his\u00a0time\u00a0in Auckland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of\u00a0conducting a blind peer review of Klasz’s book, ePress invited four of his\u00a0peers\u00a0to submit an open review, presented here as a\u00a0discursive foreword\u00a0to the work. This introductory consideration provides a critical framework to support\u00a0the manuscript while also acknowledging its place as a reflective account of Klasz’s\u00a0residency.<\/span><\/p>\n
