IELTS meaning

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), is designed to assess the language ability of people who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It covers the four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. You can check the full list of organisations that recognise IELTS on the website www.ielts.org.

IELTS overview

The IELTS test assesses your English language ability in the four key areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking. You get a score for your overall ability as well as individual scores for each area. Scores range from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user).

With two to three test dates per week, it's easy to find an IELTS test date that suits your schedule at Unitec. IELTS is available in two test versions: Academic, for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and the General Training Test, which is accredited for migration and measures practical, everyday English skills.

We offer two different formats for your IELTS test; paper-based or computer-delivered. The test format, question types, time allocated to each test part, and content is the same for test types. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all completed on the same day with no breaks between each test. The Speaking test is completed in a face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner on the same day, after Listening, Reading and Writing tests.

Taking IELTS on a computer has many benefits. For example, your results arrive a lot faster. With computer-delivered IELTS your results will be available within 3 to 5 days.

We recommend you watch the videos about the Computer-Delivered IELTS Test as the tutorials will familiarise you with functions and how to use the computers. We also recommend that you practice online so you know how the system works. View more information and sample questions on the IELTS website.

How do I get my IELTS test results?

Only one copy of your IELTS test report form (TRF) will be posted to your address or may be collected. Your Test Report Form is a valuable document and you should keep it safe and secure as it is valid for 2 years, with no limit on how many times you can use it for study, work, or migration.

An additional five copies of your results can be sent free of charge to receiving institutions if they were listed in the 'applications to recognising organisations' section of the online application that you submitted. A receiving institution is a tertiary education institution, a professional body or a government department that has set IELTS as an entry requirement.

Any further copies or copies applied for after this time will incur a fee of NZ$20.00 each (international post and/or courier charges may also apply). To request duplicate copies of your IELTS test report form (TRF), please download and complete the Duplicate IELTS Test Report application form and payment form and return them to:
