Leading shower and tapware company Methven has seen real benefits from its relationship with Unitec and hopes to see the partnership continue to grow.
Methven’s relationship with Unitec began at the end of 2016 when the company was looking for assistance in their Operations area. Group Director of Operations, Aaron Latimer, contacted Unitec and four possible candidates from the Bachelors programme in Operations Management were put forward. After an interview process two students were selected to start in short term, full time roles within Methven’s Operations team.
“We initially intended for the students to work with us over the summer period,” says Head of Operational Analytics and Integration, Deepesh Hari. “This was extended to a six-month role for one student and a permanent full-time role for the other. The arrangement worked really well for both parties – the students were given the opportunity to gain real life work experience and we were able to get a good understanding of their ability without having to commit to a permanent role. It’s certainly something we’ll be looking to do again.”
What’s more, Deepesh says both students added value to the company.
“We found that both students made a real difference to us. We’re not a big business, so it’s often technical skills, rather than the theory behind how things work, that we find important. Their competency in things like excel were invaluable to our operations team and demonstrated that Unitec’s programmes are delivering what the industry needs.”
The internship success experienced in Methven’s Operations area spurred other business units to consider taking on interns as well. Methven’s Group Marketing area, which covers the company’s Product Management, Marketing, Brand and Research divisions, has also recently started a formal internship programme with Unitec. While it’s early days, the Group Marketing team say the partnership has the potential to offer real long term benefits, and they’re looking forward to seeing where it will go.
