Korikori Tinana | Yoga at the Marae - 5 Sep

In celebration of Matariki (Māori New Year) and the coming of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), we're hosting yoga at our Marae.

We'll come together in our beautiful wharenui, Ngākau Māhaki, to do some yoga from 7pm - 8pm. 
These classes will incorporate the use of Te Reo Māori so you can learn more reo through the art of yoga. We’ll open and close each class with a karakia (prayer), and by the end of the month you will feel confident enough to lead it on your own.
Our kaiako (teacher) is a Unitec Graduate of the Bachelors of Social Practice and has studied at Kawai Purapura, on a yoga teachers course.

My name is Miho Kodaira. I am from Japan, and have been living in New Zealand for over 17years.  

I am a Reflexologist, a Mental Health Support Worker and am a beginner Yoga teacher.

My connection to Unitec started in 2011 when I studied the Certificate of Community Skill, then followed by the Bachelor of Social Practice for the next three years. I attended the Karanga wananga in 2017 and this year also to absorb the power of Karanga. I have been well supported by the Maia Māori Centre Team throughout my study, and I have remained in touch with them ever since. They have given me the sense of belongings with Manaakitanga, reminding me my Whakapapa to stand strong as well as they believe in me and what I do (mahi).

I completed a 200hours Yoga teacher’s training at Kawai Purapura in Auckland early this year in order to deepen my knowledge of yoga.  Yoga has been always there when I need to relax, clear my mind, and strengthen my body. My style of Yoga is traditional Hatha based with other styles of Yoga, including short guided meditation and breathing technique for balance and relaxation.

My passion is to invite anyone to try a piece of Yoga. Since I am a still on my journey as a yoga teacher, my aim is to deliver simple and approachable classes for people and to incorporate three kupu Māori (Māori words) into the class. I would like people to experience how subtle movements can make the differences in our body and mind. I would like people to know Yoga is not a competition but time for ourselves. Allowing time to nuture ourselves can be one of the hardest thing to do in our daily lives, I would like to extend an invite out to people to take up this opportunity.

This is a FREE event but if you would like to give a koha (donation) then feel free to bring along a canned good. All proceeds will go towards student initiatives held at our Marae.
