{"id":3557,"date":"2025-09-10T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unitec.ac.nz\/UnitecResearchBlog\/?p=3557"},"modified":"2025-09-09T11:23:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T22:23:20","slug":"maori-and-indigenous-research-centre-opens-its-doors-to-future-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unitec.ac.nz\/UnitecResearchBlog\/index.php\/maori-and-indigenous-research-centre-opens-its-doors-to-future-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"M\u0101ori and Indigenous Research Centre opens its doors to future collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b (M\u0101ori and Indigenous Research Centre) opened its doors to the community and kaimahi from both Unitec and Manukau Institute of Technology at their Open Day in B111 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenest.unitec.ac.nz\/TheNestWP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Nga-Wai-logo-300x74.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113416\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Open Day was an opportunity for visitors to meet the Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b team and hear about some of their research.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenest.unitec.ac.nz\/TheNestWP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_7969-300x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113421\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The day opened with karakia and an influx of kaimahi from Tuapapa Rangahau \u2013 led by Roseanne Ellis, our new Director, Research and Enterprise T\u0101maki, and our MAIA and Pacific Centre wh\u0101nau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors enjoyed the beautiful kai, k\u014drero, and whakawhanaungatanga throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the day\u2019s highlights was a Strategic Ideation session, which was an opportunity for Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b to meet with kaimahi wanting to do research and discuss potential future collaborations and partnerships on future projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was thoroughly pleased with the Open Day and appreciated all those who made time to stop by.&nbsp; I had some really lovely conversations and look forward to more,\u201d says Associate Professor, Deborah Heke, Director of Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b M\u0101ori and Indigenous Research Centre<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenest.unitec.ac.nz\/TheNestWP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_8759-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113425\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would specifically like to extend my thanks to Taharangi Vivienne Merito, Papa Hohepa Renata and Matua Hare Paniora for bringing the Ng\u0101ti Wh\u0101tua \u014crakei wh\u0101nau through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thenest.unitec.ac.nz\/TheNestWP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_8752-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113422\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was lovely to share our space and for them to see and hear about some of our rangahau, especially the Taura K\u016btai (flax mussel ropes) that are a collaboration between Hinewaimarama and some of their Ng\u0101ti Wh\u0101tua \u014crakei weavers. We\u2019re hoping this (re)introduction is the foundation for a developing relationship with iwi.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assoc. Prof. Heke added that they were privileged to have Director \u2013 M\u0101ori Education, MIT<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>Dr Wiremu Manaia in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whakawhanaungatanga was a great start to an ongoing discussion about the potential role of Ng\u0101 Wai a Te T\u016b\u012b in supporting Kaupapa M\u0101ori researchers at MIT and into our merge,\u201d Assoc. Prof. Heke explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assoc.
