Read the wider announcement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.govt.nz\/news-and-events\/nz-researchers-awarded-714m-tackle-pressing-health-issues\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor Heke\u2019s project&nbsp;<em>Developing a model of w\u0101hine (well)being and belonging in and with te taiao<\/em>&nbsp;received $400,000 over three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of her project is to enhance the wellbeing and belonging of M\u0101ori women by reconnecting their practices and stories to the natural environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reframes poor health statistics of M\u0101ori, influenced by colonization and systemic issues, and provides a safe space to elevate mana and capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study uses traditional and contemporary storytelling\u2014Korikori K\u014drero, w\u0101nanga, and creative exhibitions\u2014to develop a wellbeing model based on Ng\u0101 Pou M\u0101reikura: five pou representing w\u0101hine relationships to atua, taiao, and themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really excited to continue this work, that stemmed from my PhD and recent mahi funded by Ng\u0101 Pae o Te M\u0101ramatanga,\u201d Assoc. Professor Heke explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDoing Kaupapa M\u0101ori research, like this, is a reminder that indigenous knowledge systems live in our stories, our movements, our creativity, and in our taiao. This rangahau is an opportunity to explore w\u0101hine M\u0101ori wellbeing from all those perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assoc. Prof. Heke\u2019s project officially starts on 1 September and spans three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will be recruiting a Research Assistant before the end of the year to help with the project and am currently advertising for a summer intern to conduct a literature review.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deb hopes to conduct a w\u0101nanga before the end of the year to introduce the Kaupapa and start developing relationships with stakeholders and potential contributors. That will likely look like a creative exhibition at a marae similar to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tekupengamareikura.com\/research-media\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about Assoc.
