An Automotive Engineering project to\u00a0electrify a tuk-tuk became a labour of love\u00a0for one lecturer and his students \u2013 as well as a\u00a0testament to the benefits of problem-based learning.<\/p>\n
Tuk-tuks are an iconic part of most streetscapes\u00a0in Asia, Africa and Central America; so,\u00a0unfortunately, are the pollutants and noise\u00a0they emit. For two Unitec Bachelor of Applied\u00a0Technology students, looking for a\u00a0final-year industry project in Automotive\u00a0Engineering, this problem was ripe with\u00a0challenges and real-world sustainability benefit. So Donald\u00a0Nderingo and Jay Kumar decided to import\u00a0and electrify a tuk-tuk.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wanted to see how hard or easy it was\u00a0to do. We read about electric vehicles a lot,\u00a0but you don\u2019t usually get to be part of a project\u00a0where you can see it tangibly come together,\u201d\u00a0says Nderingo.<\/p>\n
Getting a tuk-tuk to their workshop turned\u00a0out to be just the first of many challenges the team and their lecturer, Dr Roman Kudin, faced on the road to success.<\/p>\n
