It also shows how to enter geographic features from external data sources such as an Excel file.<\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitec.ac.nz\/GisForConservation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Exercise1_PDF-wordpress.pdf\">Click here for PDF version<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<p><strong>Downloading basemap data for a country<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Go to the website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diva-gis.org\/gdata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.diva-gis.org\/gdata<\/a><br \/>\n2. Select Fiji from the Country drop down menu<br \/>\n3. Click on OK to download the Administrative areas shapefile<br \/>\n4. Click on Download in the Spatial Data Download window<br \/>\n5. Save the .zip file to a Project Folder in your Desktop<br \/>\n6. Go back to the Download data by country page and repeat steps 3 to 5 to download Roads, Elevation, Population and Gazeteer<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AMOttpvnPnM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>B:\u00a0<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Downloading landcover data<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>The land cover database is available at\n<div>http:\/\/forobs.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/products\/glc2000\/products.php<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Fiji link and download to your Project Folder as an ESRI shapefile<\/li>\n<li>Open ArcMap from the Start Menu<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_4poGKWrlvM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>C:\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Unzipping downloaded files and setting\u00a0<\/b><\/span><b>the projection in ArcMap<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Unzip all downloaded files into your Project Folder<\/li>\n<li>Open ArcMap and Create a New Blank Map (leave your Default geodatabase as is)<\/li>\n<li>Right mouse click on the Layers icon in the Table of Contents<\/li>\n<li>Select Properties at the very bottom<\/li>\n<li>Click on the Coordinate System Tab<\/li>\n<li>Select Predefined -&gt; Projected Coordinate\n<div>System -&gt; National Grids -&gt; Oceans-<\/div>\n<div>&gt;Fiji 1986 Fiji Map Grid<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click on Apply<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xf6_Nu-txOE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>D:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Adding Layers in ArcMap<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When you add additional shapefiles or\u00a0layers you will be asked to transform the layer\u00a0if it has a different coordinate\u00a0system. Click on OK when the dialog box comes up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Add the downloaded layers by clicking on the + button and selecting all the layers<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>You should now have the following layers\/data:<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OpmFzKNRSdc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>E:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Reading location data from external\u00a0<\/b><\/span><b>files<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The gazetteer contains all the names of identified\u00a0<\/span>features for a region<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">From the File Menu select Add Data-&gt;<\/span>Add XY Data<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Choose the \u201cFJI\u201d table from the drop\u00a0<\/span>down menu or click on the folder to look\u00a0for the \u201cFJI\u201d database in the Project Folder<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If the X Field and Y Fields are blank or\u00a0<\/span>\u201cLong\u201d and \u201cLat\u201d do not appear, it means\u00a0that the columns are not formatted as\u00a0numbers. To rectify this, open the FJI.dbf\u00a0file in Excel, Select all the numbers in the\u00a0Lat and Long columns then Click on the\u00a0warning icon and select \u201cConvert to number\u201d\u00a0and the text will be reformatted<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Save the FJI.dbf file as an Excel file \u201cFJI.<\/span>xlsx\u201d (it is easier to process)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_OYLnrXVL-k\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><b>F:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Exporting into a Shapefile the data\u00a0from the Excel File<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Go back to ArcMap<\/li>\n<li>From the File Menu select Add Data-&gt;Add XY Data<\/li>\n<li>Look for the file \u201cFJI.xlsx\u201d and Click Add<\/li>\n<li>The worksheets in the file appear; Selec\u00a0\u201cFJI$\u201d and Click Add<\/li>\n<li>The LONG and LAT Fields are now\u00a0shown<\/li>\n<li>When you click on OK, a warning about\u00a0missing Object_ID is shown.
