Want to help young children develop a love of learning and make a difference to their lives? In this field-based programme you develop the skills to teach in licensed and chartered early childhood education centres. Gain a thorough grounding in theories of teaching and learning, child development, and working with children and their familes in Aotearoa New Zealand (including knowledge of te reo and tikanga Maori).

Highlights

  • Teacher registration: once you've completed this degree, you can apply for teacher registration with the New Zealand Teachers Council.
  • This programme helps you become a competent, knowledgeable and reflective early childhood teacher who is committed to young children’s children.
  • Emphasis on teaching practice: you’ll be working (paid or voluntary) in a licensed and chartered early childhood centre for at least 15 hours per week during the programme.
  • Each year, you also take part in practicum blocks. During this time you’ll be a full-time student working in an early education centre for 37.5 hours per week.
  • A strong emphasis on the New Zealand early childhood curriculum document, Te Whāriki, and a socio-cultural approach to learning.
  • Acknowledges Te Tiriti o Waitangi and prepares you to implement te reo Maori me ona tikanga in your teaching practice.
  • A focus on research: you develop an understanding of research methodologies with a particular emphasis on action research (self-study) in an early childhood setting.

You’ll be given guidelines for learning and are expected to carry out independent study, both of course-related theory and the practice of early childhood education. All courses are internally assessed and include theoretical and practical components. There are no exams.
