Manual Metal Arc Welding (Introduction)

This practical hands-on short course provides an introduction to arc welding for students with little or no welding experience, and leads on to a recognised industry standard.

The course includes:

  • Introduction to arc welding
  • Safety precautions
  • Set-up and use of equipment
  • Mild steel welding
  • Electrode terminology
  • Basic down-hand welding
  • Theoretical and practical training in metal arc welding

Upon the successful completion of the course, students will gain credits towards the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) unit standards 2670, 2682 and receive a Unitec Certificate.

Note: As this course leads to NZQA Unit standard awards, you will need to attach a verified true copy of your passport (and/or permanent residence permit) or NZ birth certificate. See below for more details.

Manual Metal Arc Welding (Intermediate)

This practical hands-on short course is designed for students who have completed the Manual Metal Arc Welding (Introduction) course, or those who have prior experience in basic arc welding. The course includes:

  • Operation of arc welding machinery
  • Material preparation
  • Electrode terminology
  • Down-hand in heavy material
  • Safety precautions and practice.

Upon successful completion of the course students will gain credits towards New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) unit standards 2670, 2671, and receive a Unitec Certificate.

Note: As this course leads to NZQA Unit standard awards, you will need to attach a verified true copy of your passport (and/or permanent residence permit) or NZ birth certificate. See below for more details.

AS/NZS 2980 Certified Arc Welding

This practical hands-on short course is designed for students seeking certification as an arc welder and who have completed the Manual Metal Arc Welding intermediate course, or those who have equivalent practical experience.

The course includes:

  • Material preparation
  • Low hydrogen electrode welding
  • Safety precautions and practice
  • T-fillet welding break-over test

Upon reaching the prescribed standard students may attempt the AS/NZS 2980 certification in any of the following four positions: down-hand, horizontal-vertical, vertical, up and overhead positions. The fee for each attempt is $100.00 per test plate. Please note this fee is additional to the course fees.

Fees: $631.28 (incl GST)

How to enrol

Please complete the Short Course enrolment form, providing your full details and the code of the class you wish to attend.

As these courses lead to NZQA Unit standard awards, you will need to attach a verified true copy of your passport (and/or permanent residence permit) or NZ birth certificate. This can be signed as a true copy by a solicitor, or Justice of the Peace. Alternatively, bring original documents to Student Central at Unitec to any one of the three locations indicated on the Short Course application form.

As places are limited, it is recommended you apply early. Applications will be accepted up to 7 days prior to classes commencing. If there are insufficient numbers registered for a course Unitec reserves the right to postpone or cancel. If classes are cancelled, your fee will be refunded in full.

All fees include GST. Payment can be made by EFTPOS, cheque or credit card.
