About the festival

Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival is in its fifth year. The festival is both a platform for for emerging student filmmakers and a screening of selected new student film work. The festival attracts student made films from around the world and is the biggest tertiary student film festival of its type in Australasia. Unitec’s Performing and Screen Arts department has hosted the festival since its inception in 2012.

This year’s festival will be held at Unitec in Auckland, New Zealand on 28-29 October 2017. The festival will feature screenings of films selected for competition in undergrad & postgrad fiction, animation, experimental, documentary and secondary school categories,. The festival will attract secondary school and tertiary level students, educators and film industry guests. A full programme with a list of guest speakers, panel discussions and screenings for this year’s festival will be announced shortly. Here are some quick facts:

* Uni Shorts was first held in 2012, then in 2013, 2014 and 2016. This year will be the fifth year of the festival.
* The only tertiary-level student film festival of its type in Australasia held annually.
* Established in 2012 to showcase student film work and create a platform for discussion on issues impacting student filmmakers.
* A festival with a growing international profile.
* Entry categories: undergrad/postgrad fiction, animation, non narrative, documentary and NZ secondary school categories.
* Hosted by Unitec’s Creative Industries/Performing and Screen Arts in Auckland, the biggest performing and screen arts school in New Zealand.

Mission Statement
* To present and celebrate the excellence, diversity and potential in student made films to the wider community; provide a forum for student filmmakers, media teachers and tertiary teachers to discuss and network so as to foster inspire and mentor the continued development of and professional career opportunities for student filmmakers.
