This is to give film schools, universities and secondary schools more time to submit their student made short films for the Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival 2017 which will take place at Unitec Institute of Technology in Auckland, New Zealand on the weekend of 28-29 October 2017.

We are now calling for entries for this year’s Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival which will be held in Auckland in October 2017 (Date TBC). Great prizes to be announced.

IS YOUR SHORT FILM ELIGIBLE?
• All films entered must be entirely student-made from Nov 2015 – Jan 2017.
• All films entered must be no longer than 20 minutes running time
• Film ratio must be 16×9, resolution: 1080 or 720HD
• All non-English films must have English subtitles embedded.
• Submitting individuals/institutions must obtain necessary clearances for any copyrighted material or music used in their films.
• Entry categories: Fiction (undergraduate), Fiction (postgraduate), Documentary, Experimental, Animation, Secondary Schools (NZ only).

HOW TO ENTER:
1. Complete the online entry form here.
2. Send us your film via a secure downloadable Dropbox, VIMEO or WeTransfer link to unishorts@unitec.ac.nz.
3. Alternatively, you can post us your DVD screener to: Uni Shorts, Unitec Performing & Screen Arts, Private Bag 92025, Victoria St West, Auckland 1142, New Zealand. Mark all packages ‘No Commercial Value’ and ensure postmarked date is on or before entry date deadline.
4. All submissions must be accompanied by a short synopsis/logline (50 words max), production credits, director’s bio (100 words max) & headshot photo (JPEG format approx. 1MB size), plus two (2) still images of your film. Email all files to unishorts@unitec.ac.nz with the name of your film in the subject line.

25 short films have been selected from around the world to be screen in competition at this year’s Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival on Saturday, 15 October. Prizemoney of NZ$500 will be awarded to each winner: Best Animation, Best Experimental, Best Documentary, Best Undergraduate Fiction, Best Postgraduate Fiction and Best NZ Secondary Schools Film. There will be an additional NZ$500 awarded to the winner of the Audience Award which will be decided by audience vote at the festival.

UNI SHORTS 2016 will be held at the Red Lecture Theatre, Unitec Institute of Technology campus in Mt Albert, Auckland. This year’s theme will be about ‘Collaboration’.

UNI SHORTS is the only student film festival of its type in Australasia catering to both tertiary/university and secondary school young filmmakers. The festival was the idea of film students studying at Unitec’s Performing and Screen Arts in Auckland, New Zealand who wanted to create a platform to showcase student film work and discuss issues relevant to emerging filmmakers about to enter the industry. The inaugural event was held in Auckland in 2012.

Twenty five student-made short films from around the world have made the final cut for the 2016 Uni Shorts International Student Film Festival which will be hosted at Unitec in Auckland in October. Films from USA, Germany, Spain, Philippines, India, Australia, Israel, Russia and China will screen in competition with films from host nation New Zealand. In addition, five films will contest the New Zealand Secondary Schools category. A date in October for this year’s festival will be confirmed shortly but it will be held again at the Unitec Institute of Technology, Mt Albert campus in Auckland.

Great news! As many schools are only returning from their holiday break, we have extended the entry deadline to 11 March 2016.

So if you haven’t submitted your film to Uni Shorts 2016 yet, and your film is 20 minutes or less and entirely student-made as part of a course of study between Nov 2013-Dec 2015, we will accept your film as long as your entry is postmarked on or before 11 March.

While we have received many entries already, we would love to see more student films in the Experimental (Non-Narrative), Animation, Documentary and Post-graduate Fiction genres/categories. So a special note to all Design and Animation schools, we would welcome your student work!
