Programme summary

Develop the English language skills for further study, employment or participation in the New Zealand community. Further your ability to speak, read and write English, and improve your vocabulary.

If English is an additional language for you, but you already speak it quite well, this is a good programme to choose. The Diploma in English (Advanced) helps you develop your English language skills to an advanced level. Courses will give you the linguistic, learning and cultural skills for employment, further study or to make the most of community life in New Zealand. In the third semester you can study courses that prepare you for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that require an IELTS score of 6.5.

The programme includes courses that cover general English language skills, both oral and text-based, at two levels. These courses help you develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary, as well as the correct use of English grammar.

The programme also includes courses that prepare you for particular goals:

  • English for Social and Community Purposes: language skills and cultural knowledge to take an active part in social and community activities.
  • English for the Workplace: English skills to find suitable employment in New Zealand. This course includes a 40-hour work experience placement arranged by the student and the tutor as agreed.
  • English for Academic Purposes: skills for tertiary study in New Zealand, including how to use a library, undertake research, write essays, take notes and give an academic presentation.
  • Academic Skills for Business Studies: research skills, business reports, oral presentations and note taking in a business studies context.

Exit qualification

If you partially complete the programme you may be eligible for an exit diploma or certificate, depending on your course of study. These include the Diploma in English (three endorsements: Academic, Employment or Social/Community) and the Certificate in English (three endorsements: Academic, Employment or Social/Community).
