Understanding the Media
Professional Mentoring and Supervision Skills-Certificated Short Course (Level 7, 15 Credits)
This 5 day course equips experienced not for profit managers, social service and health professionals with the skills and knowledge to provide professional mentoring and supervision to others in their own discipline area. It introduces the concepts of professional mentoring and supervision, practical models and frameworks for supervision and provides skills for supervision conversations.
There are opportunities to develop confidence and competence in the role of supervisor through small group practice and coaching. On successful completion of the course and the assignments, participants receive a Unitec NZ certificate.

Community Funding
This course will improve your skills in developing funding strategies for your organisation that focus on long-term survival and success. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Developing and Managing Staff Performance
This course will improve your abilities to motivate, manage and evaluate the performance of others in ways that work in your not-for-profit organisation.
Topics include:
- What is performance management?
- The seven habits of effective performance management
- Ensuring expectations are set and met in work teams
- Dealing with non-performance
- Performance appraisal
- The art of feedback – having constructive conversations about performance
- Coaching and mentoring in the workplace.

Conflict Management
Dealing with conflict is a common part of life in not for profit organisations.
This course explores what conflict looks like, the impact it can have on an organisation and equips participants with the tools to create an environment to minimise the negative impact of conflict. Mediation skills are looked at and practised for those times when conflict occurs.
Topics include the nature of conflict, creating a positive environment to minimise and manage conflict, personal conflict management styles, getting to a win-win and mediation skills.

Legal Issues: Hot Topics for Not-for-Profit Organisations
Are you familiar with legal issues that may impact on your organisation? This course is run by a not-for-profit law expert and introduces you to what you need to know if you are establishing or working in a not-for-profit organisation.
Topics include
- How the law works and how it affects organisations and not for profit management, organisational structures and founding documents
- Legal duties of governing bodies, staff and volunteers
- The effects of The Charities Act 2005.

Working for Effective Employment Relations – Workplace Wellbeing
This workshop aims to
- Increase participants' awareness and understanding of employment relations law, employment issues and practices in the community and voluntary sector

- Provide managers and employers with information and resources that will support community sector employers to think more strategically about ways they can work collectively to enhance employment relationships.

Understanding the Media
It is the aim of this course to provide managers of not for profit organisations with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage their organisation's relationship with the news media.
Course Objectives
