WHO: Donna Tuari (Ngāti Porou)

JOB: Animal Technician, The University of Auckland, Auckland

QUALIFICATION:  Diploma in Veterinary Nursing

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:  “The animals are the most enjoyable part of my job. I look after many different species of animals – monitoring their health, changing their housing and cages, monitoring their water and feed, and ensuring the animals’ welfare is met.

The biggest challenge is not being able to spend more time with each individual animal! I also love the continual on-site learning and training that my employer provides for me.”

BEST THINGS ABOUT UNITEC:  “I met some really good people, handled some amazing animals, and had fun while learning the necessary skills to becoming a good animal technician. I found all my lecturers to be conscientious, always there when needed and always eager to help.

We also got hands-on experience at the veterinary clinics based on Unitec’s campus and took part in work experience in veterinary clinics throughout the Auckland area. My work experience placements were really varied, and prepared me well for work.”
