Douglas Wright’s iconic Knee Dance and performances by renowned New Zealand choreographers Michael Parmenter, Joshua Cesan, Kelly Nash and Tamsyn Russell were just some of the highlights of last week’s Showcase 17, an annual exhibition of works by Unitec’s Contemporary Dance students.

The show, which was staged over three nights at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, was overseen by artistic director and Creative Industries academic leader, Charene Griggs. Unitec Adjunct Professor Charles Koroneho and Unitec lecturers Katie Burton and Paul Young were also among the guest choreographers.

Students from across all year groups staged performances, including those from Unitec’s joint programme with the Beijing Dance Academy.  They showcased a new work created for them in China, The Wind and the Wave by Zhao Zhibo.

The show was met with rapturous applause, with guests praising it for its vibrant energy, immense talent and original creativity.
