Aim: 
To enable the student to develop an understanding of the theoretical basis and application of animal husbandry in a range of animal species.

Topics include: 

Safe working practices
- Safe working practices - Zoonoses - Safe handling and restraint of animals
Animal Health
- Physical and behavioural indicators of health and ill health, - Principles of preventative health care and its application,
- The biology of parasite life cycles (ectoparasites and endoparasites) - Infection and disease in domestic and agricultural animals. - Routine health care procedures
Living / housing environment
- Scientific and practical aspects for provision and maintenance of living environments for domestic and agricultural animals
Nutrition
- Supply of absorbed nutrients, - Biochemical use of nutrients in animals for maintenance and production (domestic and agricultural animals), - Storage and preparation of feed.
Reproduction
- Terminology - Scientific principles of animal selection, - The breeding process and management.
Identification
- Common breeds of domestic species - Determining age and gender of domestic species - Artificial methods of animal identification
