Aim: 
To develop the student to be able to critically examine and evaluate a body of literature in relation to a practice/work-based issue to arrive at a relevant and informed research question(s) and to contextualise and understand the relevance of this question to practice and the wider community
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the Master of Health Science or PGDip in Health Science or PGCert in Health Science or Master of Applied Practice or PGDip in Applied Practice or PGCert in Applied Practice to enrol in this course.
Topics include: 

1. Research and Policy (any area of applied practice (eg, health care, social work, counselling, community development, education, management, etc.).
2. What is research and research-informed practice?
3. What is the role of the researcher?
4. Engaging with relevant community (where appropriate); who are we doing the research for / why are we doing the research?
5. Appropriate rationale and research aims and questions.
6. Critically reflecting on the nature of the problem or topic to be researched.
7. Evaluating research in the context of community and practice (research consumership, community priorities).
8. Maori historical narratives (competing narratives).
9. Defending a research project / composing a literature review for a research proposal.
