Automotive Air Conditioning (Installation and Servicing)

This short course is designed to cover the installation and servicing of air conditioning systems.

The course includes:

Basic Car Maintenance

This short course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge that will enable you to carry out minor maintenance and repairs to your own vehicles.

The programme covers:

  • Basic tuning
  • Minor repairs
  • Oil and filter servicing
  • Basic maintenance (including brakes and cooling systems)

Introduction to Multiplexing and CAN Bus

This course is designed to give automotive electricians a range of general principles of design, operation and testing techniques for the new CAN Bus systems. There will also be brief demonstrations of testing techniques.
The course includes:

  • Basics of CAN Bus and multiplexing, including history, advantages, examples, distributed functionality and signal protocols.
  • CAN Bus specifics are cited, with slow and fast speed, CAN Bus architecture, terminating resistors and vehicle examples.
  • Diagnostic issues will be applied to vehicles, including using oscilloscopes or meters for diagnosis, dead bus or trouble code diagnosis, bus architecture, module swapping and VIN programming, and sample diagnostic problems.
  • Voltage drop principles are compared with wiring voltages.
  • Fibre optic systems and strategy of repair.

Oscilloscope for Automotive Diagnosis

This short course is designed to give automotive electricians an overview of basic and advanced techniques of using a digital oscilloscope for vehicle diagnosis.
This includes :

  • Overview of available oscilloscopes
  • Basic adjustments and triggering to capture a pattern
  • Sample patterns: ECU input signals and output commands, and what to look for that’s either good or bad
  • Ignition patterns and how to get them: Secondary voltage, primary voltage and primary amperage patterns
  • Relative compression testing: Using DC motor CEMF characteristics, high amp pickups, and ignition triggering to diagnose low compression
  • Fuel pump testing: Using low amp probes to diagnose intermittent problems
  • Other applications: Pressure/vacuum transducers at fuel rail, intake or exhaust manifolds
