Maritime Museum
Maritime Museum offers opportunities for students with an interest in pursuing a maritime career to get their sea hours up. Inexperienced “crew” are welcomed with the opportunity to gain enough seafaring experience to become a “Mate” and eventually a “Master”.
As a “guide”, volunteers gain an in depth insight into NZ’s rich maritime heritage while developing great customer services skills and knowledge invaluable to a career in Tourism. www.maritimemuseum.co.nz
Recreate Auckland
Rob, a graduate of the Performing Arts School in Film and Camera is currently employed on a part time basis by Recreate – an agency that he has worked with as a volunteer over his 3 years study at Unitec. While a student, Rob spent holiday times helping with adventure camps and had loads of fun sailing, kayaking and skiing with young people with special needs. www.recreate-auckland.org.nz
Family Budgeting Services
Finance students may be interested in the opportunity to utilise their budgeting skills by volunteering with the NZ Federation of Family Budgeting Services. As part of the training (which is free to trainees) there is a 6 week training program (usually one day a week for six weeks), supervision with your first few clients, and at least one day of ongoing training each year to keep your skills up to date. This is an excellent way to put your knowledge into practice and assist families in need. www.familybudgeting.org.nz
Citizens Advice Bureau
Want to develop your customer service, problem solving, advice and support and research skills? Volunteering at the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) will do exactly this for you. Before you work with the clients you will have a supervised probation period over 12 weeks and before this a 6 week training of 2 days per week. These days run through the week but if there is a group of students who would like to be trained they can organise a time to suit. www.cab.org.nz
United North Piha Lifeguards
Calling Sports students and those who love being in the elements. Foundation Studies student Yvonne works with the United North Piha Lifeguards. She gets to patrol the beaches and save lives. As part of her training she has completed a First Aid course which is useful in any workplace, Inflatable Rubber Boats training and taken part in Surf Competitions with racing boats. Rugby World Cup
With the World Cup Rugby 2011 just around the corner Auckland Rugby are looking for 5000 volunteers across the country. They need hosts, organisers of festival activities, tourist information officers, airport welcoming crew, VIP assistants, media communicators, workforce accreditators and people to help with the actual matches and logistics. Volunteers will be given full training for job and site specific areas. Friends of Oakley Creek
Right on the doorstep of Unitec there is a little known hidden secret – Oakley Creek. Situated between the halls of residence the conservation group Friends of Oakley Creek meet to monitor rodents and clean up the area. Two 3rd year Bio Diversity students Jett and Lynn enjoy giving back to the Unitec community by taking care of the campus while also enjoying the social aspect of meeting new friends and connecting with other social groups. www.oakley.org.nz
Habitat for Humanity
Keen to utilise your building skills while studying? Habitat for Humanity are currently bulding low cost homes in south Auckland. If you are experienced or just new on the tools they would be grateful for you help, even just for a day. They have a qualified builder on site and are producing brand new homes from scratch to fully painted and carpeted dwellings. People of any age and experience can assist.
Currently Habitat are looking for an IT savvy social networking person to develop their website further.
If you are really keen, there is work to be done in Fiji, rebuilding the damage from cyclone Thomas in March. Volunteers must pay for their own costs but fundraising is allowed. www.habitat.org.nz
Auckland City Mission
Auckland City Mission would love some help from students – the roles they are currently looking at are serving tea and coffee in the drop in centre in Hobson St, sorting clothing for stores, packing food parcels and of course we are coming up to the street appeal in December. If you are away from friends and family on Christmas day your help would be appreciated at the Xmas lunch, an excellent opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the true spirit of Christmas. Youthline
Megan Smith, a Bachelor of Construction student creates balance in her life by working as a volunteer for Youthline. She loves her work and has found the 8 week personal development program that all volunteers must complete, an enriching experience. Once trained and ready to go the counsellors are supervised for their first 12 weeks. All that is required is a shift of 3 hours once a week or whenever suits best. www.youthline.co.nz
Age Concern
Calling all Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Community Skills and Language students. Age Concern are looking for people to spend at least 1 hour per week visiting and having conversations with elderly people who live independently. Most Volunteers start with 1 hour per week but find this tends to increase as special relationships develop. There is a particular need in West Auckland currently. www.ageconcern.org.nz
One Laptop
"one lap top" is an organisation with the purpose of providing lap top education to children in areas where there is no internet or wireless connection. The lap tops are programmed with educational games and information. Volunteers are wanted to test the laptops and also to translate the programs into different languages. No computer experience is needed. If you are interested you can go along to the meetings held at 11am on Saturday at the "Windsor" 144 Parnell rd All that is required is a couple of hours per week. Tabitha an Academic Advisor working for Te Puna Ako is a supporter of this cause and was actively engaging many students at our Volunteering Day.
NZ Fire Service
NZ Fire Service are looking for you! If you enjoy action, rescue and adventure then training as a volunteer fireman or woman may be for you. The minimum age is 16 and opportunities range from medical first aid to rescue - even the odd cat up a tree! All shapes and sizes are welcomed but a a good level of fitness is required. Great opportunity for those interested in paramedics and general rescue / emergency situations.
Trade Aid
Trade Aid a retail outlet specialising in fair trade products is on the lookout for volunteer staff. In every store there is only one paid worker the rest are volunteers. Excellent opportunity to gain retail and customer service experience while supporting fair trade. The run up to Christmas is particularly busy, contact www.tradeaid.org.nz
Refugee Services
Students of Social Practice may greatly benefit from the opportunity provided by the Refugee Services. Refugee Services is a cross cultural social service helping refugees in their first 6 months of settlement in NZ. Volunteers are trained to provide practical support during this time. The training runs over 6 weeks followed up by field work. Volunteers usually spend up to 6 hours per week for the first 2 months, then down to 2 hours per week or as the need arises. It is possible to gain a NZQA recognised certificate in Refugee Settlement support while working for this organisation. www.refugeeservices.org.nz
