Become a more effective educational leader and manager, and enhance your professional development. Further your understanding of a number of topics within educational theory, policy and practice, and conduct original research in an area of your interest.
Are you working in the education sector and want to further your
professional development? The Master of Education supports educators working in
a wide range of educational settings, as well as those with an academic
interest in the field of education. The Master of Education is designed to
promote critical engagement with contemporary issues in education. It provides
particular opportunities for graduates with early childhood degrees who want to
further enhance their professional knowledge.
Develop the knowledge and skills to advance your career in education. Courses cover a wide range of educational
theory, policy and practice, including: curriculum and assessment, equity and
evaluation in education, education policy, technologies for teaching and
learning, and professional development. Choose between a full thesis and a
smaller dissertation, and deepen your understanding of educational research
methods. Research topics are selected in relation to participants' areas of
interest.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet either the general admission requirements or the special admission requirements. Applicants must also meet the English language requirements. Applicants may be interviewed.
General admission
Applicants must:
- Have a recognised bachelors degree in the same or similar discipline, with merit achievement (deemed to be an average grade of B- or higher in all level 7 courses); or
- Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline, recognised as being equivalent to at least merit achievement in a bachelors degree.
Special admission
Applicants must hold a qualification equivalent to one recognised by the Ministry of Education as a degree for salary purposes.
English language
Applicants must:
- Have a minimum of eight NCEA credits in English at level 2, of which four must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; or
- Have successfully completed tertiary study at level 5 or higher in an English medium; or
- Have a grade of 5 or better in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate English in an English-rich subject, or equivalent; or
- Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.5 (with no band score lower than 6.0 in Writing), or a TOEFL score of no less than 575, or equivalent; or
- Have an appropriate Unitec English language qualification, such as the Diploma in English (Advanced), or equivalent.
