Programme summary
Learn to speak and write English more fluently, accurately and confidently. Gain an awareness of New Zealand society and culture.
If English is an additional language for you, and your English is already
highly developed, this is a good programme to choose. It will help you to
enhance your English language skills for a career in your field of expertise
and/or to achieve higher qualifications. You can select an academic (further
study) focus or a professional employment focus from level 7 courses.
The programme will help you to:
- Speak English fluently, accurately and confidently in both formal and
informal contexts, and in professional, academic and social environments
- Communicate fluently and accurately in writing
- Interact in culturally appropriate ways
- Have an awareness of Aotearoa New Zealand society and culture
- Develop skills for professional or other employment.
You can complete the Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional
Language in one semester. After graduating, you could continue to study at a
postgraduate level or pursue your professional goals.
The programme consists of two compulsory language development courses and a
range of elective courses. The compulsory courses develop proficiency in spoken
and written English by focusing on language form and function. The elective
courses cover areas such as global employment, research, culture and society,
language studies and business writing, and include a work or community
placement experience.
If you're interested in becoming an early childhood teacher, the Graduate
Certificate in English as an Additional Language can help you pathway into
Unitec's Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). It is regarded as an
equivalent of an IELTS (Academic) band score of 7.0 for entry into the Bachelor
of Teaching (ECE) programme at Unitec.
To obtain the graduate certificate, you must gain a total of 60 credits by
completing two compulsory courses and two electives, of which only one can be
at level 6.
Real-world learning
You will be provided with a range of interactive and authentic resources to
help you learn, as well as with highly experienced, friendly and helpful
lecturers who are either native speakers or accomplished linguists with a high
level of fluency in the language.
Flexible study options
To help you combine study with the other demands of your life, you can study
this programme on a part-time basis.

Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the general admission requirements and the English language requirements.
General admission
Applicants must:
- Have a recognised degree; or
- Hold a professional qualification in a relevant discipline; or
- Be able to demonstrate competencies equivalent to the above.
English language
Applicants must:
- Have a minimum of eight NCEA credits in English at level 2, of which four must be in Reading and four in Writing, or equivalent; or
- Have a minimum of seven NCEA credits in an English-rich subject at level 3, or equivalent; or
- Have successfully completed studies at level 5 or higher in an English medium; or
- Have a grade of 5 or better in New Zealand Sixth Form Certificate English, or equivalent; or
- Have gained New Zealand University Bursaries in an English-rich subject, with a minimum mark of 40 percent, or equivalent; or
- Have an overall IELTS band score (Academic) of no less than 6.5 (with no band score lower than 6.0), or a TOEFL score of no less than 575, or equivalent; or
- Have an appropriate Unitec English language qualification, such as the Diploma in English (Advanced), or equivalent.
All applicants will be interviewed.
