Programme summary

Learn to speak and write English more fluently, accurately and confidently. Gain an awareness of New Zealand society and culture.

If English is an additional language for you, and your English is already highly developed, this is a good programme to choose. It will help you to enhance your English language skills for a career in your field of expertise and/or to achieve higher qualifications. You can select an academic (further study) focus or a professional employment focus from level 7 courses.

The programme will help you to:

  • Speak English fluently, accurately and confidently in both formal and informal contexts, and in professional, academic and social environments
  • Communicate fluently and accurately in writing
  • Interact in culturally appropriate ways
  • Have an awareness of Aotearoa New Zealand society and culture
  • Develop skills for professional or other employment.

You can complete the Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language in one semester. After graduating, you could continue to study at a postgraduate level or pursue your professional goals.

The programme consists of two compulsory language development courses and a range of elective courses. The compulsory courses develop proficiency in spoken and written English by focusing on language form and function. The elective courses cover areas such as global employment, research, culture and society, language studies and business writing, and include a work or community placement experience.

If you're interested in becoming an early childhood teacher, the Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language can help you pathway into Unitec's Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). It is regarded as an equivalent of an IELTS (Academic) band score of 7.0 for entry into the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) programme at Unitec.

To obtain the graduate certificate, you must gain a total of 60 credits by completing two compulsory courses and two electives, of which only one can be at level 6.

Real-world learning
You will be provided with a range of interactive and authentic resources to help you learn, as well as with highly experienced, friendly and helpful lecturers who are either native speakers or accomplished linguists with a high level of fluency in the language.

Flexible study options
To help you combine study with the other demands of your life, you can study this programme on a part-time basis.
