The Copyright Amendment Act 2011

The Copyright (Infringement File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011 came into force on 1 September 2011.

We would like to make particular note of the following:

Under the new legislation it is illegal for anyone, including Unitec students, to:

  • Copy music or audio visual files in breach of copyright
  • Use peer to peer file sharing applications to download files in breach of copyright
  • Redistribute copyright material without proper authorisation

Unitec also does not permit students to download or install any illegal software onto Unitec's computers.

If you use a Unitec Computer or a Unitec Wi-fi service to carry out activities in breach of copyright legislation, Unitec may be liable for copyright infringement costs of up to $15,000. Unitec reserves the right to recover these costs from you if your actions led to Unitec being charged. You may also face disciplinary action by Unitec.

Monitoring Internet Activity

The internet is an important educational tool for our students and we will continue to provide reasonable internet access to students who observe copyright legislation and Unitec's computer and internet usage rules. See Unitec's Electronic Devices and System's Policy for further details.

Internet activity is recorded. This information may be used by Unitec when seeking to recover costs of any copyright infringement.

We appreciate your cooperation in observing copyright legislation so that we can continue to provide you with internet access through our server.
