Programme summary

Develop the skills to advance your retail career. Study for free, and improve your communication and customer services skills, and knowledge of stock control and work practices.

Are you already working in the retail sector and want to further your career? The National Certificate in Retail is an intermediate/supervisory qualification for people who are working or intending to work in the retail industry.

Courses cover a range of retail-related skills and will help you develop knowledge relating to staff, customers, products, communication and administration in a retail environment. Improve your understanding of stock control and systems, inward goods, stock maintenance, telephone sales, customer services, workplace safety and legislation relating to the sale of goods and services. You’ll also develop your ability to give and receive feedback, respond to customer complaints, and give oral instructions in the workplace.

Highlights

• Zero fees: this programme is free to all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 16 and over. If after the completion of the programme you would like to apply for your National Certificate in Retail award, a national certificate application fee of $15 applies.
• Community-based programme: workshops are carried out at a variety of sites throughout the region. For more information about where this programme will be taught, please call 0800 500 193.
• A combination of study and work-based training.
• Site visits, one-on-one class contact sessions and workshops.
• Part-time study over a six-month period.
• Supportive learning environment: you’ll be taught by helpful staff, and class facilitators will support your learning through telephone conversations and email.
