Programme summary

Gain a sound knowledge of the business environment, including accounting, banking, finance and management. Develop your communication and decision-making skills, and learn from lecturers with plenty of business experience.

To get ahead in today’s business world, you have to be competent in a wide range of business skills. The New Zealand Diploma in Business equips you with these skills and provides you with a sound knowledge of organisations and their management, accounting, the economic environment and commercial law.

You can either complete the general diploma or specialise in one of two business areas:

  • Accounting
  • Management.

Highlights

  • Endorsed by the New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) and the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA).
  • A focus on the practical application of what you've learnt: you work on real-world assignments and learn from lecturers with plenty of industry experience.
  • Emphasis on up-to-date business practices.
  • Suitable both for those who can't wait to start their business career and for students planning to move on to higher-level business study.
  • If you choose your courses carefully you can meet the academic requirements for the NZICA College of Accounting Technicians (AT) or the NZIM Diploma in Management. Your Programme Leader or Student Adviser will help you choose your courses if you want to meet any of these academic requirements.
  • Flexible study options.

You must successfully complete 12 courses. Start with six selected core courses, which will give you a broad and thorough grounding in business principles. Then, choose six elective courses (at least four must be at level 6). Up to three courses can be at level 4.

If you’re a full-time student, you can only enrol in three courses per semester unless special circumstances are approved by the department. If you’re studying part-time, you should only take two courses per semester.

When you choose your courses keep in mind any future business studies you might want to do. For instance, if you’re considering going on to the Bachelor of Business after completing the diploma, you should decide which business major you’re likely to select, and then choose courses in the New Zealand Diploma in Business that maximise cross-credits.

Exit qualification
If you’ve completed any six New Zealand Diploma in Business courses (with at least four courses at level 5 or above) you can apply for a level 5 Diploma in Business Studies. You can apply for this diploma as a milestone award if you’re continuing on to complete the New Zealand Diploma in Business, or as an exit qualification if you leave the New Zealand Diploma in Business.
