Industry Associations
Landscaping New Zealand
Landscaping New Zealand (previously LIANZ) is a national landscape industry organisation responsible for representing its professional members and looking after the public profile of the landscape industry, training and education, and industry standards.
Unitec has allied membership of Landscaping New Zealand, in addition to staff and student membership.
Other relationships include a mentoring programme for second-year Diploma in Landscape Design students (including 40 hours’ industry experience), prizes for the top two diploma graduates, and attending Landscaping New Zealand conferences.
New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects
The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) is the internationally recognised professional body of qualified practitioners in New Zealand. NZILA accredits Unitec’s Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, and a five-yearly review by the NZILA ensures that the programme meets industry requirements.
The NZILA offers student membership, and a number of Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students are graduate members.
Seven Department of Landscape Architecture staff are members of the NZILA, including one Fellow and two Registered members. Staff contribute to the NZILA at national executive committee level and the Auckland branch level.
Garden Design Society
The Garden Design Society began in 2002, initiated by Unitec staff and students. It aims to be both a strong interest group and a professional body for garden designers. Regular activities include visits to gardens, suppliers, manufacturers, seminars, and workshops.
Unitec’s landscape staff (past and present) have held positions on the national executive, the Auckland events committee and the accrediting board.
Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture
Unitec is a member of the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), which covers virtually all programmes of higher learning in landscape architecture in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Reset Urban Design
In 2010, the Department of Landscape Architecture and Reset Urban Design collaborated to develop an annual series of seminars.
This has included projects from selected guest scholars such as renowned landscape architect Elizabeth Mossop.
Boffa Miskell
Boffa Miskell has been a leading environmental planning and design consultancy in New Zealand for over 35 years.
Each year Boffa Miskell offers internships and awards for Department of Landscape Architecture students, and guest lectures and field trips for Bachelor of Landscape Architecture students.
Field_LA
Field_LA is an Auckland-based design studio, involved in contemporary landscape architecture.
The Field_LA partners also teach at the Department of Landscape Architecture and annually sponsor an award for innovative design within the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture.
Isthmus Group
Isthmus Group is a New Zealand-based design practice with an international profile in landscape architecture.
Each year Isthmus offers prizes and awards to Department of Landscape Architecture students.
Water Dynamics
Water Dynamics is an integrated and innovative business in the design, manufacture, distribution and installation of irrigation systems.
Water Dynamics sponsors an award for excellence in landscape management within the Diploma of Landscape Design.
Living Roofs Aotearoa
The Department of Landscape Architecture is involved in research on living roofs in New Zealand and is pleased to be able to facilitate dissemination of information on this new technology and support for establishment of living roofs throughout New Zealand through it's sponsorship of Living Roofs Aotearoa.
Living Roofs is an independent organisation that is promoting the uptake of green roofs in New Zealand. Living Roofs is a resource for information, which is supported and sponsored by leading green roof companies, authorities and organisations.
Garden to Table Trust
The Garden to Table programme teaches children aged 7-10 to grow, harvest, prepare and share food, to help them make better food choices.
Unitec students and staff are helping create a kitchen garden for Te Atatu Peninsula Primary School (one of four pilot schools in the programme), inspired by the school children’s design ideas for the garden. View an article from Your Home & Garden.
