Industry Internships
Our Industry Internship programme can provide your organisation with enthusiastic senior students who bring their fresh ideas, inspiration and newly gained expertise to your business, and help out with projects you never find the time for.
Whether your organisation is small, medium or large, commercial or not-for-profit, we’d like to invite you to participate in this rewarding programme. We have students majoring in a variety of areas including public relations, event management, international communication and media studies.

Courteney Macleod
Bachelor of Communication graduate and intern at NZ Fashion Week
“I’ve really enjoyed being there and while I’m job searching I’m also gaining really good experience. The editor there has been really supportive in finding a job for me as well through people she knows in the industry.”
How does it work?
As a key component of the Bachelor of Communication, students are required to undertake internships in the workplace.
Students complete 200 hours of work (generally 2 days per week over a 10-week period) each semester and are available for work placements twice a year. Semester One - Februrary to June, and Semester Two - July to November.
No payment for this work period is required and there is no expectation or obligation of ongoing employment.
What we require of you
- Provide clear project outcomes or duties for the student. A Unitec placement plan must be jointly completed by yourself and the student(s)
- Induct the student(s)
- Provide appropriate support and supervision of the work undertaken
- Provide sufficient resources appropriate to the project/placement
- Take part in a joint assessment of the student at the end of the project/work placement.
