Aim: 
To develop students’ English language skills so that they can participate effectively in the study of English at CEFR Level B1 in a selected context: general, academic or workplace.
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) programme or the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) programme to enrol in this course.
Topics include: 

- The tertiary learning environment and e-learning technologies, including Moodle
- Aspects of bicultural and multi cultural New Zealand, appropriate to the level - Kupu Maori and phrases that occur frequently in NZ English
- Development of oral and text-based skills through interaction with texts and topics relevant to the level, interests and goals of the learner, including Future goals, Education, Work, Home, Travel, News/Current Issues in NZ
- Autonomous learning strategies, including use of the library and LLC, self-study
- Learning strategies, including working in groups, organisational skills, enquiry skills
- What makes a good language learner
- Accessing resources available on campus and the wider community (eg community libraries, public transport)
- Language structures as identified at CEFR B1. Core genres
Information, description, narrative, recount, report, discursive, persuasive, simple expository, simple research, procedural social texts, formal and informal letters, emails and blogs
