Aim: 
To develop students’ English language skills to enable them to communicate with some independence and fluency in order to participate in routine academic English language contexts
Pre-requisites / Co-requisites: 
Students must be admitted to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) programme or the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) programme to enrol in this course.
Topics include: 

- The tertiary learning environment and e-learning technologies, including Moodle
- Aspects of bicultural and multi cultural New Zealand, appropriate to the level and context
- Kupu Maori and phrases that occur frequently in academic discourse eg ako
- Development of English for Academic Purposes through interaction with texts and topics including Health, Education, Business, Conservation, Biculturalism and Multiculturalism
- Guest speakers from academic disciplines at Unitec, including Maia
- Autonomous learning strategies, including use of the library and LLC, self-study
- Learning strategies, including working in groups, organisational skills, enquiry skills
- What makes a good language learner
- Accessing resources available on campus and the wider community (eg community libraries, public transport)
- A range of appropriate linguistic features such as discourse markers, comparative and contrastive structure, high frequency academic vocabulary
