Aim: 
To enable students to examine, reflect and discuss the historical development of dance languages and theories in order to situate themselves in a wider dance context. This course focuses on placing selected movements and developments of production and performance in the context of the student’s specialist discipline. There is a focus on experiencing professional art making in the community through field trips and site visits.

Audience / performer relationships and the possibilities of creative expression in live performance Changes in technology Contributions and influence of selected dance practitioners and theorists
Dance as a socio-cultural-historical phenomenon Dance genre Dance on film
Historical development of contemporary dance Historical, social, political contexts History of theatre
From ritual/religion to Greece and ending by mid 19th Century
History of world cinema NZ dance from 19th century until 1950s The use of the space and the relationship with the audience View and discuss a range of performance and/or artistic events
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is taught in lecture/seminar/tutorial modes Topics may be taught in an integrated manner
Activities include self-directed learning, class exercises, work in groups, guest lectures and field trips to Film Festival, Art Gallery, Live Performance, Museum exhibition, etc.
