We progressively hone your technical skills and help develop smart interpersonal skills too.
This programme is designed to build professional adaptive skills that will prepare you for the inevitable technical disruption and changes you will encounter in the IT industry. In your final year, you will have an opportunity to complete a real industry IT related project, a key advantage when looking for employment and presenting your CV to employers.

You can choose from five pathway options designed to help you hit the ground running when you graduate:
Computer networks and cloud computing. Computer networks, real and virtual, are the connectors of the computing world. Organisations need people to help them manage their networks and 25% of computing jobs are in this area. Cloud computing is a relatively new development and is increasingly taking over the market. Choose this pathway and you'll learn about the latest technologies by working on practical problems in class. This pathway also gives you the opportunity to gain industry recognised Microsoft and Cisco certifications, including those in Cloud Computing.
Software engineering. Software engineering regularly rates as one of the top jobs in the world. This dynamic and changing pathway gives graduates the knowledge to design and develop software solutions and products. You'll be taught by industry practitioners and experienced academics and have access to work experience opportunities in the software industry.
Games development. This pathway prepares you to work in the fast-growing field of game development and interactive media. The game development combines design, software development and storytelling. You'll be encouraged to work with students and staff in the creative disciplines such as design and performing and screen arts. Industry links mean you'll also get the opportunity to contribute to the development of real games while still studying towards your degree.
Business intelligence. The amount of data and speed at which it is collected by organisations has reached unprecedented levels in recent years. But data without analysis is just a storage problem. Business intelligence combines business, databases, data warehousing, data mining and software development to find ways for organisations to use this data for future planning. Business intelligence helps organisations to excel in their field and compete effectively with other organisations. Through these courses, you'll learn how to create and manage data warehouse solutions that fit into the strategies of complex enterprises in the ever-changing market, and how to develop effective data models and reports to help business decision-making.
Cybersecurity. Every person who touches a computer keyboard or a smartphone screen could be a cyber-threat. Cybersecurity is a new area in computing and there is a big gap between graduates and job numbers. People with cybersecurity skills are needed by both the private and public sectors. The cybersecurity pathway gives graduates the knowledge to help them protect computers, networks and data from these threats.

To help you on your chosen IT career we have IBM Kickstarter scholarships available for 20 first year students. In years two and three we also have specific IT scholarships supported by IBM for the ‘Earn As You Learn’ programme. To qualify for this opportunity you need to follow either the Computer Networks & Cloud Computing or Software Engineering pathways.
If you complete the level 5 compulsory courses plus two electives (a total of 120 credits) you can exit the programme with a Certificate in Computing Systems.
If you complete 240 credits at levels 5 to 7, including the level 5 compulsory courses and at least 90 credits from level 6 including the level 6 compulsory courses, you can exit with a Diploma in Computing Systems.
For this programme, you will need the following:
- 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or higher including 14 credits in ICT subject or equivalent (digital technology and/or computing)
- 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or higher in Literacy
- 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or higher in Numeracy
Successfully completed the New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4).
If English is your second language, you will need one or more of the following:
- Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
- Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
- Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years
