Programme overview

Students in this programme are in a formal apprenticeship agreement with an on-site supervisor and Unitec. The majority of your learning will take place through real life and practical work-based settings. Timetabled off-job training sessions complement the workplace learning and focus to integrate your practical workplace learning experiences and to make sense of complex situations.

Qualification and what next

Once you’ve successfully completed this programme and apprenticeship you’ll receive the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) and are considered a trade qualified carpenter.

Admission requirements

For this programme, you will need the following:

1. NCEA Level 1 including 10 credits in English (5 in reading, 5 in writing) and 10 credits in Mathematics
2. A minimum of 4 years secondary education
3. Be at least 16 years old by the time the programme begins
4. If English is your second language, you will need one or more of the following:

  • Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University entrance
  • Be able to provide evidence you satisfy our criteria for existing English proficiency
  • Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years

Don’t have NCEA? We also accept:

  • A relevant qualification at Level 2 on the NZQF or above or an equivalent qualification; or
  • Provide sufficient evidence to be eligible for special or discretionary admission.
